Hi I am Dean Coulson, I am a complete fitness fanatic and have been for as long as I can remember. I am the owner of Assert Fitness, a Northumberland based fitness business here in the UK. I got sick of seeing so many people who were in desperate need to improve the lives through health and fitness that I took it upon myself to help as many people as I could, in my local area and worldwide!
Starting in martial arts at age 15, I soon realised that there were many facets to the training I was doing and set about finding them. It soon became apparent that along with speed, agility and endurance, which I was achieving in the martial arts I was lacking in the strength department, which was also having a limiting effect on my power development. So I got myself a bench and weights and off I went.
I achieved my Black belt in an art called Jintian Do (Derived from Tukido and Taekwondo, it was a freestyle karate, also incorporating boxing, kickboxing) at 17, I continued to develop in the art. I also moved forward with the weights, reading everything I could and trying it out.
I am a certified self protection instructor dan grade under the world renowned Geoff Thompson and his real combat system through the British combat association.
Through years of training and research I know what works and what doesn’t. Setbacks abound, I have relentlessly moved forwards, meeting some excellent people along the way, only too willing to help me attain what I wanted.
Fast forward to present time. I have learned so much, and yet it is still such a small piece. I continue to grow in knowledge, pressure testing, using the relevant and discarding the crap. I am self propelling, Driven by a thirst for knowledge to be better than I am. I see the best training partner as myself, at the end of the day it is me who I have to beat, to be better every session. The only way to grow physically and mentally is to move forward, always be uncomfortable. Be comfortable and you are standing still.
To that end I have decided to create this site to impart my knowledge on years of strength and conditioning work for anyone who actually wants to achieve something. Forget pussyfooting around in a gym, aimlessly using machines and cardio machines in the vain hope that spending 2 hours in a gym yapping to their mates will get them where they want to be.
Get busy, it isn’t just about lifting traditional weights, it is about strength and conditioning using other methods – High intensity interval training, Bodyweight, Sandbags, Kettlebells, sledgehammers, sleds, heavy ropes, Tyres. In fact any odd object you can find that you can turn into a training tool. Outside of the box is where you want to be.
In truth, the only way to get there is to get off your arse and put major effort in.
